Il 13 ottobre ci ha lasciato prematuramente Jason McVickers, corrispondente di GBOpera da Chicago, e mio grande amico da almeno venticinque anni. Jason era un esperto conoscitore della musica, dell’opera, della giusta tecnica vocale. Nella vita era un “social worker”, un operatore sociale specializzato in psicoterapia, molto amato ed apprezzato per la dedizione verso le classi sociali più svantaggiate di Chicago. Nato in Louisiana, si era trasferito a Chicago per laurearsi e lì era rimasto. Ci siamo conosciuti in occasione di una sua trasferta lirica a New York e fummo fra i primissimi collaboratori di Parterre Box, allora soltanto un ciclostile distribuito con non poche traversie davanti al Met. Jason, nonostante avesse come quasi tutti gusti ben definiti in termini di artisti preferiti, era sempre un gentiluomo, mai coinvolto in quelle spiacevole risse (che al tempo si chiamavano “flames”) che caratterizzavano il forum più importante dell’epoca, OPERA-L. Alcuni anni fa aveva scoperto un nuovo amore, l’esercizio fisico, la palestra, cui si è dedicato con enorme passione, e dei cui risultati andava giustamente fiero.  Jason lascia un vuoto incolmabile in molte comunità, e soprattutto nel cuore del suo compagno di una vita, Michael.

On October 13 Jason McVickers, the GBOpera correspondent from Chicago, left us prematurely. A friend of mine for at least twenty-five years, Jason was a true connoisseur of music, opera, and the correct vocal technique. He was a social worker specialized in psychotherapy, much beloved and appreciated for his devotion toward Chicago’s less privileged citizens. Born in Louisiana, he moved to Chicago to attend college and decided to settle down in the Windy City. We met during one of his operatic trips to New York, and were among the very first collaborators of Parterre Box, at the time an often controversial but always witty flier distributed in front of the Met not without problems. Although he had his own defined preferences in terms of favorite artists, Jason was always a gentleman and never engaged in those unpleasant online fights (at the time called “flames”) that characterized the most important opera forum of the time, OPERA-L-. A few years ago he discovered a new interest, physical exercise and the gym, to which he devoted himself, proud of his amazing results. Jason will be sorely missed. Our most heartfelt condolences to his husband and life companion Michael.
